Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020

With a built-in predisposition to athleticism as the formative nest that witnessed the development of the American pastime, the metropolis of New York City has always served its sporting citizens well, with numerous historic franchises vehemently supported including the classy, upper-crust tenants of the Polo Grounds, the New York Giants. The darlings of Manhattan throughout the latter half of the Roaring Twenties, culminating in Stanley Cup championships in both 1928 and 1933, the New York Rangers – led by iconic hockey guru Lester Patrick – can include countless legends donning the historic “Blueshirt”, with the club’s 100th anniversary only a few seasons away. This gorgeous original New York Rangers wool sweater originates from the early-to-mid-1930s. With no labeling present, “Rangers” has been placed diagonally across the chest in single, red-over-white felt letters, with no number over the reverse. While we are unsure who would have originally worn the sweater, the high quality construction, material, style and team repairs lead us to believe this is a pro-quality sweater produced for the Rangers. We should further note that with no number over the reverse, the possibility exists that this sweater could have been worn by a coach with numerous photos of the era showing Lester Patrick wearing a Rangers jersey (with no number over the reverse) in his role as team coach.
The vintage sweater remains in pleasing condition, with the fabric just a bit coarse, with numerous material pulls visible over the lower front and no obtrusive marks or damage. There are a few tiny holes present including over the lower reverse and upper right sleeve, with team repairs situated over the front (6) and reverse (5).
