The first captain in the history of the Chicago Black Hawks, Dick Irvin had previously led the Winnipeg Monarchs to the 1915 Allan Cup championship, and was noted for his accurate shot and tough style of play. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have a photo signed by the 1958 HOF inductee shortly before his passing in 1957, accompanied by a signed handwritten letter from a season he coached the Canadiens’ to the Stanley Cup championship, in 1944. At 8” x 10” and featuring a bust-length black and white portrait from his coaching days, the photo has been signed over the bottom right in blue ink, with Irvin adding a personalization along with the date of “Jan 22/57”. The letter is just under 5” x 8” and addressed “Friend”, with the black ink signature displaying well, with a bit of smudging. Passing away in May of 1957, Irvin was just 64.
We should note that the beginning of “Sincerely” and “Dick” on the signed photo has been gone over by Irvin, most likely to get ink flowing within his pen, with just light wear to the photo itself including a few minor and small corner creases. There are also typed notations over the reverse including “Rec’d Autographed Jan 25th, 1957”. The letter sports a pair of punched holes over the top section for binder insertion, with a pencil notation over the reverse of “Rec’d Dec 19-43”.
