Born in the UK and moving to Canada while just a few months old, netminder Byron Dafoe earned his seasoning with the Portland Winter Hawks in the WHL, with the Washington Capitals selecting him in the 1989 draft. From his time with Los Angeles in the mid-1990s, we have a signed photo-matched Kings jersey worn by Dafoe, with this example recycled from 1989-90, with evidence of multiple nameplates. A Maska Ultrafil label is affixed to the collar along with NHL and CCM crests over the reverse hem, with the sweater measuring out to roughly a size 54. Styled with the Kings team crest that saw use from 1988 to 1998, the white V-neck has been accented with grey-over-white tackle twill sleeve and verso numbers, with “Dafoe” over the nameplate in single black twill. A signed 8” x 10” photo will accompany for the photo-match.
Just a few marks are present over the lower front and sleeves, with a tear along the upper right edge of the team crest, along with a bit of fraying to the threading. There is also pilling along the outer collar, and a faint stain over the left shoulder. Byron has signed within the reverse “3” in black marker, adding “Lord” above. Photo-matched to the 1996-97 pre-season, the included 8" x 10" signed photo has been matched to the long black mark after the "I" of "Kings" on the team crest. We should also note that Dafoe is shown wearing these older style double twill grey-over-white numbers on his 1995-96 hockey cards (which was issued early in the season circa November/December 1995), so he would also have worn this jersey in the 1995-96 pre-season and/or regular season. Mario Gosselin was the last player to wear the #31 in 1989-90 before Grant Fuhr (traded to Kings on Feb. 14 1995 - 14 games) and Jamie Storr (5 games) in 1994-95 wore it as well, so the jersey was most likely originally made for Gosselin in 1989-90, with the longer former nameplate suggesting that. Additionally, Jamie Storr is shown on his 1994-95 Upper Deck Electric Ice #236 card also wearing the older style double twill grey-over-white numbers, while we couldn't find such images for Fuhr.
