A true piece of hockey history, we have the actual try-out letter sent to Sherbrooke St. Francis superstar Herb Carnegie by the New York Rangers in 1948, along with a customs/immigration letter signed by HOFer Frank Boucher, and the original mailing envelope. The current QPHL MVP when this letter was sent to Carnegie, it details the 1948-49 try-out at training camp held at Saranac Lake, New York, with the Black Ace invited to attend. The second letter contains information about Carnegie’s invite, with this letter meant to be shown to border officials to facilitate his crossing into the US. Signed by Boucher in bold blue ink, the signature displays wonderfully. According to Carnegie himself, the Rangers wanted to hold his rights while he played in their minor-league system, but by doing so, he would earn less money than playing in Quebec. Turning down the offer, Carnegie’s time in the NHL would never come to pass. An LOA from the Carnegie family will accompany these important documents.
At approx 8 ½” x 11” and dated “August 20th, 1948”, each document is on MSG letterhead, with heavy wear showing including toning, creasing, corner wear and small edge tears at the fold lines. The original mailing envelope has “The Rangers” graphics over the left side, with a postmark of “Aug 24 1948”. The envelope is also in lower grade, with toning, staining, a few tears and a portion missing over the left side. There is also a name written over the reverse in pencil.
