Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
A gentlemanly athlete with scholastic pedigree – something not common for the era – Christy Mathewson attended Bucknell University before ascending to the Majors, serving as class president while also starring in baseball, football and basketball. Originally culled from a salesman sample book, we have a Royal Tailors clothing page from 1914 featuring the immortal hurler, with these originally produced to advertise various clothing lines. At approx 15” x 18”, the darling of Manhattan is pictured just outside the Polo Grounds dressing room in period finery with cane in hand, outfitted in a dapper button-up coat with large lapels and matching bowler. A cameo of Big Six in game-action graces the upper right, with the copyrighted date along the bottom right. Matted and framed to full dimensions of approx 20” x 23”, Mathewson is arguably the most collected of all Dead Ball aces.
There are a few scuff marks visible to the lithographed page along with a white blemish, with pencil writing over the bottom of the coat, with this only visible when the frame is held at a certain angle. There is also wear to the frame, with a few chips to the surface, with the paper backing loose in a few spots.
