Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified for the 1972-74 NHL Goal Puck Program could be obtained by mail with the buyer's choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that divulged which team-goal said puck accounted for. We have a pair of pucks from the program, one from 1972-73, the other, 1973-74, with these particular examples used by Frank Mahovlich. First, the 1972-73 puck was used to score the Montreal Canadiens 183rd goal of the season vs the Pittsburgh Penguins, on Jan 18th 1973. The 1973-74 puck was used to score the Montreal Canadiens 164th goal of the season vs the Chicago Black Hawks at the Forum, on Jan 26th 1974. An NHL Goal Puck Registration Certificate will accompany the Jan 26th puck.
Scoring a pair in the Jan 18th match vs Pittsburgh, the goal scored with the offered puck serving as his 23rd of the season, and 487th of his career. The Pens logo is heavily worn, with the Goal Puck Program label darkened over time, with just light wear to the puck itself. The Jan 26th puck served as Mahovlich's 15th goal of the season, and 517th of his career. The Canadiens logo has darkened with a few marks present, with heavy toning and numerous dark marks over the Goal Puck Program label. The puck itself shows moderate wear, with a slice along the side as well as a few light-coloured blemishes.
