Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Fascinating and alluring isn't it, the thought of owning a collectible that no one else in the world does? Splendid one-of-a-kind creation here is part of Upper Deck's 2017-18 high end "Splendor" issue and star a riveting and thought-provoking bold fountain pen signature of hockey icon Conn Smythe, cut from a Maple Leaf Gardens program. Hand-numbered "1/1" on the front, the thick prize is encased and sealed with an Upper Deck silver hologram, the latter showing no signs of having been tampered with. For the uninformed who know Conn Smythe by the trophy that bears his name and which is awarded to the most valuable player of the Stanley Cup playoffs each year, Smythe, as longtime principal owner of the Toronto club, (1927-1961), re-named Toronto's NHL team the "Maple Leafs" and was responsible for building Maple Leaf Gardens. As owner of numerous championship teams, his name appears eight times on the Stanley Cup. An important Hockey Hall of Fame "builder", Constantine Falkland Cary Smythe was also a war hero, earning the Military Cross in World War I and also serving Canada in World War II.
