Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019

A veteran of over 600 NHL contests, defenceman Jim Benning was recognized for his offensive prowess, scoring over 240 career points – especially impressive for a blueliner. From the 1983-84 NHL season, one that witnessed Benning net a career-high 51 points, we have a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey worn by the Edmonton native. A faded laundering label with “50” sizing is affixed to the collar, with an embroidered Maska label over the reverse bottom hem. Styled with the famous maple leaf team crest with “Toronto Maple Leaf” embroidered-on, the knit V-neck has been accented with “8” over the sleeves and verso in single twill, with the Toronto 150th anniversary crest over the right breast. Benning also dropped the gloves while on the road three times in the second half of the season, including taking on Keith Crowder on Feb 9th. An LOA will accompany.
We should note that this set saw prolonged use, employed for the 1984-85 preseason, with the 150th patch untouched but the nameplate removed for the preseason, then later re-attached by the Leafs for the jersey to be sold. Featuring a clean front and team crest, a few random dark marks are visible, with scuff marks over each sleeve. There are also team repairs, with 7 over the left sleeve, along with single examples over the front and reverse. The collar has also been torn and repaired – most likely from one of Benning`s fights – with reinforced stitching along both the vertical and horizontal seams.
