Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
A labour of love, we have a large collection of vintage hockey scrapbooks totaling 10 and spanning from the circa mid-1930s to the late-1950s give or take, with each book originally part of the Milt Schmidt collection and obtained directly from his family. Pilled high at a full 9” in height, the books average from approx 8 ½” x 11” right up to 11” x 15”, with each loaded with thoroughly interesting period content consisting primarily of newspaper clippings. All the Bruins stars of the day are included within the scrapbooks including Shore, Cowley, Dumart, Coleville, Bauer, Thompson and others. Highlights include approx 16 skinned Bee Hive photos including Shore, Thompson, Brimsek, Crawford and others, followed by a photo of Brimsek pulled from a program, a 1933 typed letter on Bruins letterhead signed by Director of Publicity Frank Ryan, a picture of Boston Garden (probably pulled from a program) and a premium for Frank Patrick from 1934-35 (7” x 10”). An LOA from the Schmidt family will accompany.
Worth mentioning, there’s also a handwritten sheet within the scrapbook collection that lists a number of contemporary player’s off-season occupations, including “Ice Cream Salesman” for Lorne Chabot, “Band Leader” for George Hainsworth and “Automobile Salesman” for Busher Jackson. The majority of the material in each book is fairly brittle, with numerous loose and detached clippings/pages. There is also heavy toning as one would expect considering age, with an almost mothball-type smell present, common with old newsprint.
