One of sports oldest and most respected organizations, the National Hockey League recently celebrated its centennial in 2017, with the sole survivor from the original charter member clubs the Montreal Canadiens. Created on Nov 26th 1917 after several meetings between NHA owners, the newly-formed league would compete with 5 clubs its first season, adopting the existing rules and constitution of the now-disbanded NHA. Saved by some intelligent individual to now serve as the ultimate display piece celebrating the earliest days of the NHL, we have a framed front-page copy of the Montreal Herald from Nov 27th 2017, with the newly-formed league featured. At approx. 18” x 32 ½” and ideal for display, the antique newspaper mentions in detail the formation of the league the previous day, with an image of inaugural President Frank Calder utilized. Framed to full dimensions of 21 ½” x 35 ½”, a framed photo of Montreal’s Windsor Station will accompany.
With expected yellowing to the newsprint, the frame shows moderate wear, with a plaque listing the particulars added along the top section. The Windsor station photo is a modern copy of a print from circa-1900, with the CP station in full view along with wonderful horse-drawn carriages and a large streetcar. Framed to full dimensions of approx. 18 ½” x 22 ½”, a plaque has been added along the top that erroneously lists the Windsor Station as the meeting place the NHL was formed (It was actually at the Windsor Hotel just down the street).
