Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Well-known for its hockey cards of the 1950s and '60s, Parkhurst tried its hand at baseball in 1952, producing cards of players who toiled for three Canadian teams that competed in the AAA-caliber International League, the Montreal Royals, Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Athletics. Instructional cards teaching baseball/positions are also included. Amazingly, 37 out of the 42 encapsulated cards here are second-to-none at PSA, with 31 of them pop 1s with none higher! Tops are five at NM-MT 8; #31-Catcher's Stance and four Montreal players; 51-Will Samson, 56-Jim Hughes, 65-Solomon Coleman and 70-Gino Cimoli. PSA has only ever awarded marks of NM-MT 8 to 16 total examples, out of just 441 total submissions. Other PSA chart-toppers are a NM+ 7.5 (29-Gripping The Bat), a dozen NM 7s, including 57-Don Hoak and #s 15, 30, 34, 44, 45, 59, 62, 71-Mauro, 87, 89 and 92, as well as an 8 (OC)(#78), a 7 (MK)(#48), three EX-MT+ 6.5s (60, 79, 91), six EX-MT 6s (49, 50, 55, 94, 96, 100), an EX+ 5.5 (#73) and a VG-EX+ 4.5 (#98). Please see our website for the remainder of the stellar lineup.
Before we get to the rest, it should be pointed out that the EX-MT 6 of the last card, #100-Mike Kume, an Ottawa Athletics' pitcher, is the only card #100 to have ever been slabbed by PSA...in any condition. Now then, five pop 2s (with none higher) are 11-Medlinger (NM-MT 8), 39 (EX-MT 6), 53 (EX-MT 6), 80 (EX-MT+ 6.5) and 97 (NM 7), while 84 (EX-MT 6) is a pop 3. Completing the fascinating collection are non-PSA chart-toppers; 52 (EX 5), 81 (EX-MT+ 6.5), 82 (VG+ 3.5), 83 (EX 5) and 99 (VG-EX 4). All-in-all, a formidable ensemble that represents over 40% of the 100-card set.
