Intriguing pair of bronze sculptures feature one from the 1984 Canada Cup tournament that is not often offered, and another from the 1979 Challenge Cup series. A former Hockey Canada executive informed us that the "Gladstone" sculptures were produced at a high cost prior to the 1984 Canada Cup tournament. With a total height of 9", the funky maple leaf work includes “Gladstone”, the sculptor's name, at the bottom of the sculpture, which apparently represents a man in motion when viewed from the opposite side. The 1979 Challenge Cup sculpture trophy is originally from the personal collection of Alan Eagleson and comes with a copy of his original LOA.
The scarce 1984 Canada Cup trophy is wonderfully preserved. It is missing a small metal plaque with “Coupe Canada Cup” engraved on it that had been affixed to the top of the black marble base, which measures 4” x 5” and stands 2” tall.
The 1979 Challenge Cup was a three-game series between a team of NHL All-Stars and the best players from the Soviet Union. Played at New York’s Madison Square Garden in February 1979, the series came about due to unparalleled growth and interest in international hockey in the 1970s, combined with decreasing fan support for the annual NHL All-Star Game, which the Challenge Cup replaced for one year. The series saw the NHL stars take the opener 4-2 but the Soviets tied things up with a 5-4 come-from-behind win before skating off with the Challenge Cup following a convincing 6-0 victory, the game being blown open with four third-period goals.
The bronze sculpture included is the memento which the participants of the series received. The sculptress' "H. Rothschild", the sculptress’ name, appears along the back edge of the bottom of the bronze sculpture, which stands a shade under 4” tall and sits atop a 4 1/8” x 6 3/4" wood base. Eagleson related to us that the Russians received these items.
