Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Popular Shirriff coins here are led chronologically by a near set from the first year of the promotion, 1960-61, with however some condition issues to report. Although the majority display well, the backs all show evidence of once having been glued, with glue residue present throughout. A one-time collector must have been a Detroit hater(!), with deliberate scratches to the clear plastic fronts of several Red Wings, including Howe and Sawchuk. We also spot a few edge chips, with the missing numbers being 35, 57, 58, 60-Abel, 61-Hall, 78, 90, 101-Simmons, 109, 110 and 120-Schmidt. Meanwhile, the metal coin set from '62-63 includes condition all over the board, with some nice near mint examples spotted, some with just a nick or small/minor scratches on the rims and others with heavy wear. The last group includes Leafs Kelly and Keon, Habs Goyette and eight of the yellow-rimmed All-Stars, with Plante, Hull, Mahovlich and Howe among them. Thrown-in is a full-page ad from a Maple Leafs program informing that collecting '61-62 coins could lead to winning a trip to a Stanley Cup playoff game.
