Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Well utilized throughout the latter half of the 19th century, trade cards allowed retailers to advertise their products and businesses, with an endless array of popular subject matter used. We have an especially desirable collection of antique trade cards totaling 15, with each featuring either hockey or ice polo. Included, we have 6 different examples from the Buford litho series (believed to be 1878-82) with each featuring a different advertiser, 2 1880s “Hockey Boy” trade cards from Buford litho (903) with each having different advertising, an 1888 "Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company" trade card, two early-1900s Anon trade cards (German text) with different advertising, a Cibils hockey trade card (French text), a Diamantine-Schuhputz / Diabona Bohnerwachs trade card (6 Eishockey), and a blank-backed card depicting ice polo.
It should be noted that the majority of the cards in this collection depict ice polo, with the single Cibils card appearing to show hockey, with “Le jeu de Hockey” printed along the base. The majority of the trade cards survive in wonderful condition - especially considering their age, with just light to moderate surface and corner wear on most. The blank-banked trade card exhibits a crease along with residue over the reverse from scrapbook removal, while one Buford (1878-82) card has a tape repair over the reverse along with a second from that series that exhibits glue residue at each corner.
