Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019

Remembered for the hit he laid on a fan that jumped the boards during a Jan 1989 match in Beantown between the Bruins and Winnipeg Jets, Ron Asselstine first spent time refereeing in the WHA during the 1970s before a long and distinguished career as a linesman in the NHL. We have a WHA referee’s sweater from the mid-1970s that been attributed to the Toronto native, according to our consignor. A partially-detached Gerry Cosby label sits along the collar, with the sweater measuring-out to roughly a size 48. Featuring a WHA crest with embroidered detailing over the left breast, the red and white striped jersey with blue collar, cuffs and waistband has “12” in dual-layer tackle twill, placed within a circular blue crest over verso. There is also evidence of a former nameplate on the vintage sweater.
The jersey survives in beautiful condition with bright and vibrant colours, with no unsightly wear or damage. Asselstine served as a WHA referee until sidelined by an incident with Gordie Howe, on Dec 5th 1975. After returning to work, this time as a linesman, Ron would later move onto the NHL where he would serve for many seasons, retiring in 1997.
