Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
A man who needs no introduction to Canadians and hockey fans, Paul Henderson served as hero to his beloved hockey-centric nation, with the memory of the paramount Summit Series victory still in the minds of hockey fans despite its near half-century vintage. We have an amazing relic from that oh so important event, with Henderson’s personal Team Canada equipment bag used throughout the famous Summit Series in 1972. At roughly 34” x 15” x 14” and originating from Team Canada trainer Joe Sgro and subsequently the property of his son Tony, the canvas bag is in Team Canada red with white accents, with “19” in tackle twill numbers affixed along one side near a full colour CCM crest, with a “Team Canada Equipe” patch with heat-pressed letters on the other. With his legendary status as the man responsible for the game’s all-time most important goal, and, completely free of hyperbole, we feel this historic relic can rightfully be considered the most noteworthy and desirable hockey bag in the entire hobby. An LOA from Tony Sgro will accompany.
Surviving in especially pleasing condition, the historic bag exhibits expected wear commensurate with its former use, with the black leather connector strap for the handles intact, with the zipper in working order. The identifiers show just very slight discoloration, with 5 intact original black leather reinforcement patches visible along the underside. There is also some light salting/soiling along one end, but this does absolutely nothing to infringe on the bag’s overall aesthetics or wonderful visual appeal.
