Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
A wonderful hoard of Bee Hive photos here is, oh so refreshingly, in impressive condition, with mostly EX+ or better examples among over 170 Group I pictures, joined by 80 from early in the Group 2 era and nothing unsightly or low grade. The breakdown and highlights from Group I are: All seven (dated) trophies, Bruins (17)(Shore), Black Hawks (20)(LoPresti, Mariucci), Red Wings (27)(C. Brown, Jennings, McCaig, McReavy), Canadiens (22)(Dame, Getliffe, T. Reardon, Singbush, Young), Maroons (3)(Connell), Americans (16)(Allen, Slobodian, Thurier), Rangers (24)(Davidson, Henry horizontal, Myles, Tustin), Leafs (41)(Mann-script over stick, Poile, Stewart-white uniform). Foster Hewitt and Wes McKnight pictures are also present, with some 3 dozen photos having lifted off of their stellar backings, requiring re-affixing. We’re running out of space here, so please visit our website for Group 2 and Crown Brand photo details – there is considerable break-up value with these terrific and classic collectibles!
Not very many notable/valuable Group 2 pictures to report, however, interestingly, half a dozen pictures appear on either blue or red backings, confirming the belief (since these look to have come from a single collector, with seven original mailing envelopes accompanying the collection), that some Group 2s were issued on colored backings. Present here are Boston’s Ken Smith (red), Chicago’s Bill Mosienko (red), Detroit’s Bill Quackenbush (blue), Montreal’s Billy Reay (blue) and two Maple Leafs; Bill Klukay (blue) and Vic Lynn (red). Joining them are 9 Bruins (Babando), 9 Hawks, 10 Wings (Howe, Sawchuk-no blade), 16 Canadiens (Beliveau, Rocket), 13 Rangers (Rayner) and 20 Leafs (Barilko, Bentley, McCormack, Rollins). Seven envelopes include five from the earlier era and two from the Group 2 years (1949, ’51), all mailed to the same collector in Saskatchewan. A Bee Hive list has dozens of tick marks in pencil and is the list as of October 20, 1953. Meanwhile, the booty continues with over three dozen Crown Brand photos, almost all of which have become detached from their original and EX-ish condition backings. The lineup is led by Howie Morenz, Toe Blake, Ace Bailey, Babe Siebert and Roy Worters, with the rest dominated by Montreal Canadiens and Maroons players. A glue stick will have them almost back to their original form! Numerous possibilities with this instant collection or interesting dealer lot.
