Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
One of early hockey’s most storied franchises, the Ottawa Hockey Club was first known as the Generals and then The Silver Seven, with the Senators moniker in use just before the close of the first decade of the twentieth century. Eleven Stanley Cups would be won by the original Senators incarnation, including victories in 1903, 1904, 1905 and 1906. We have an extremely rare 1930-31 Senators pocket schedule, along with the full 17 ¾” x 23 ¾” Ottawa Journal sports page from April 2nd 1923 and two scrapbook pages. The 2 ½” x 4 ½” schedule is on card stock, with the season’s schedule split over both sides, with advertising from Kelvinator, along with “National Hockey League” along the top of each side. A few of the results have been handwritten, with a few other pencil notations present, with considerable wear including creasing, toning and edge chipping, with the bottom right corner clipped. What makes the already rare schedule all the more exceptional is the fact that the single-season Philadelphia Quakers only played in the NHL in 1930-31, with the club listed on the schedule as the “Phillies”. Those well versed in defunct teams know how rare it is to find anything associated with the short-lived franchise, making the schedule a real prize. The Ottawa Journal sports page feature’s the headline “Ottawas Win the Stanley Cup”, with a centralized image of Lord Stanley’s hardware along with cameos of team members including Clint Benedict, Frank Nighbor, Punch Broadbent, King Clancy and others. The page exhibits heavy toning as expected, along with some creasing and tearing. The scrapbook pages are both roughly 11” x 14” give or take, with clipping of Senators players affixed, with one page having clippings on both sides. Included are Alex Connell, King Clancy, Wally Kilrea and others. The scrapbook pages remain in like condition to the Jounal page, with toning, tearing, creasing and some minor spotting.
