Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
Extremely low scoring with 5 of the 7 games shutouts, the 1945 Stanley Cup finals were closely contested, with the Maple Leafs winning the Cup on a third period Game 7 goal by HOFer Babe Pratt. We have a souvenir mini-stick that has been team-signed by the 1945 world champion Leafs, along with an 11” x 14” photo of the on-ice squad including coach Hap Day receiving the Stanley Cup from league president Red Dutton. The mini-stick is 13 ½” in length (minus the blade), with “Souvenir Victory Dinner - Toronto Maple Leafs” and “World Champions 1945” stamped across the blade. 14 have signed along the front side of the stick including deceased HOFers Day, Schriner and Stanley Cup-winning goal scorer Babe Pratt. As an added bonus, also included in the lot is copy of the 1947-48 Quaker Oats Leafs booklet “How to Play Better Hockey”.
The stick remains in wonderful condition with a number of the signatures appearing light including Schriner, with the Day example dark and bold with light bleeding. Others who have signed include Bodnar, Hill, Davidson, Jackson, Johnstone, O’Neill, McCreedy, McLean, Morris, Metz and Frank McCool. The photo states it’s provenance with “The Detroit News” within the bottom right corner, with “Stanley Cup Presentation at Detroit, April 22, 1945” handwritten along the bottom border. With some toning, edge wear and slight rolling in spots, there is also a pair of holes punched near the top, along with a horizontal crease closer to the bottom from editorial use. The Quaker book has minimal wear with rusty staples along with a previous owners name and address handwritten on the reverse.
