Yet another goaltending hero that played a prominent role in the success of the Montreal Canadiens, Gerry McNeil spent parts of seven seasons with the Habs, backstopping the club to a pair of Stanley Cup championships along with an additional pair of finals appearances. We have a group of vintage equipment that all saw use from the competent netminder during the 1950s, with an “NHL Professional” blocker produced by Cooper-Weeks that’s been signed, Reach pants that were used with les Canadiens, CCM Tackaberry skates that are attributed to use with the Habs, miss-matched D&R elbow pads, shoulder pads/arm protectors, Montreal uniform socks and a trapper produced by Hamilton’s Kenesky.
The blocker is a top-of-the-line example with all identifiers screened-on, with a canvas-wrapped padded cover attached through strapping. Free of the palm holes that are usually present on these older examples, nice use with some staining and discolouration to the outer padding is exhibited, with McNeil signing over the front in ballpoint, adding “Montreal Canadiens” and “1943-1957”. The skates with intact laces are size 8 and exhibit especially heavy wear, with considerable rubbing to sections of the outer boots, along with light surface rusting to the size 11 CCM blades. Next, the Kenesky glove is solid black with a cloth label, with light wear to the palm and moderate rubbing to the leather along the back of the fingers. The shoulder/arm pads show prolonged use with no maker visible, with what appears to be possibly blood staining over one arm. The elbow pads are a mismatched set from D&R, with one marked “professional”, with both showing heavy thorough use. Lastly, the pants are in Habs colours with a solid blue body and white and red striping accents, with a Reach cloth label along with a size “40” fly tag. Akin to the rest of the collection; heavy use is present along with soiling, with wear to both the interior material as well as the striping accents. The Habs socks are in solid red with blue and white striping bands. With intact stirrups, nice use is exhibited, with no obtrusive damage. As mentioned, just the pants and socks can claim definite use with the Habs, with the other included items possibly seeing use with the Habs or another club.
