Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
Intriguing duo to pique the interest of serious vintage hockey card and wrapper collectors is offered here, with the C57 card of Montreal Wanderers' forward Art Bernier found inside the pack of Derby Cigarettes! The outer cardboard box, which slides over the other that housed the cigarettes (six smokes), measures approximately 2" by 3". It is brittle and fragile and split along the left edge, partially split along the right and missing a part of its back. The card itself, (picturing an original member of the Montreal Canadiens, who scored in the team's very first game), has toning on the reverse, similar to the darkened back of the box, but has survived in crease-free condition, with corner/edge wear and chipping along the back edges. A special tobacco card ensemble! The C57 set was a 50-card affair that featured players who skated in the NHA, PCHA and OHA. Possible pulls from a pack of Derby Cigarettes included the rookie cards of Broadbent and Benedict, along with big stars Vezina, Lalonde, Taylor, Ross, Patrick, Malone and the Cleghorns. Oh, to be able to travel back over one hundred years in time and buy a few packs of Derby cigs!
