Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
Silencing all naysayers during their epic Summit Series performance in 1972, Russian hockey proved it could compete with the established Canadian game. We have a great collection of sticks used by Russians totaling 12, with examples from Fetisov, Makarov, Krutov, Kovalev, Frolov, Kasparaitis, Kasputin, Bykov and Babinov, along with a team-signed example from the 1992 Winter Olympics. The Darius Kasparaitis, Alexei Kovalev and Alexander Frolov sticks were used according to our consignor in 2005 in a Superliga game while the Vladimir Krutov stick hails from 1989-90. The Markov is from 1991, while the Vyacheslav Bykov was used with CSKA Moscow in the 1980s and the Sergei Babinov’s hails from USSR use circa early-1980s.
The Vladimir Krutov stick according to our consignor was used in 1989-90 with the Canucks, while the Fetisov KOHO stick has his name stamped onto the upper shaft, with a stamped “4” that has been turned into a “9” with the aid of a black marker. Each stick in the collection features the original tape jobs, and each shows varying degrees of use, with each signed except the Babinov. The 1992 Olympic Gold Medal Unified Team team-signed stick features the squad that defeated the Eric Lindros-led Canadian national team, claiming what would prove to be the Soviet empire's last hurrah in the wake of the stunning and swift fall of the Communist era. Kovalev has added the #30 he wore during the tournament to his blue marker signature among the members of the 1992 Olympic gold medal team that have signed this Russian language souvenir stick. Coaches Tikhonov and Mikhailov have also signed along with Yashin, Butsayev, Shtalenkov and Khmylev. Among the team's defensemen are familiar NHL names such as Kasparaitis, Malakhov, Zhitnik and Yushkevich.
