Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
One of the greatest eras in professional hockey, with high scoring games and physically contested spaces, the 1980s produced a number of remarkable clubs, including an Edmonton Oilers team that would carve out an impressive dynasty during the decade. We have a trio of team-signed pennants from the era with examples from Los Angeles along with an Edmonton Oilers pennant signed by the 1987-88 Stanley Cup champions including Wayne Gretzky, all hailing from the collection of a gentleman who served as a charter bus driver and obtained the signatures in Calgary. The Oilers pennant is solid white with the date of Dec 26 1987 handwritten along the top left, and 23 have signed, with the signatures somewhat faded, including Gretzky, Messier, Tikkanen, Lowe, Fuhr, McSorley, Anderson, Hannan, MacTavish and others. The second example is from 1987-88 and features the Kings earlier gold/purple combination, with the date of Dec 20th 1987 written, with approx. 18 signing in ballpoint including Robitaille, Taylor, Carson, Wells, Fenton and others. Lastly, the second Kings pennant has a date written of March 23rd 1989, with approx. 27 thin signatures that remain fairly dark with Gretzky, Taylor, Robitaille, Duchesne, Healy, Laidlaw, Tonelli, Sykes, Krushelnyski and others. All three pennants remain in wonderful condition with light wear, including some minor staining on the reverse of the 1988-89 Kings example, along with a bend to the tip of the Oilers pennant.
