Amazing opportunity is this pair of rare and breathtaking Rice Studio team photos of the two squads loaded with NHL legends that faced off against each other in the Howie Morenz Memorial Game at the Montreal Forum on November 2, 1937. The “Canadien-Maroon Team” pictures the combined product of Montreal’s two NHL teams, including deceased HOFers Siebert, Joliat and Blake from the Habs, and Blinco, Clancy, Northcott and Wentworth from the Maroons. The “NHL All-Star Team” photo featuring an all-Hall of Fame back row depicts the likes of Shore, Conacher, Boucher and Thompson in their respective NHL team uniforms surrounding coach Jack Adams in crisp detail. Both of these rarely-seen Howie Morenz Memorial Game team photos are wonderfully preserved under glass in vintage wood frames.
The “Canadien-Maroon Team” photo displays the team name above “Howie Morenz Memorial Game, November 2nd, 1937” along with the names of those pictured representing Montreal’s two NHL teams: Sitting – Siebert, Blinco, Haynes, Ward, Joliat, Howie Morenz Jr., Cude, Beveridge, Gagnon and Lepine. Standing – McKenna (trainer), Clancy, Buswell, Northcott, Savard (Canadiens president), Blake, Hart (manager), Robinson, Mantha and Wentworth, along with a notation that Dave Trottier of the Maroons did not appear in the photo. The “Rice” studio signature sits on the lower right on the ice below Lepine’s left skate.
“N.H.L. All-Star Team, Morenz Memorial Game, Forum, November 2nd 1937” appears at the bottom of the team photo with the “Rice” studio signature on the lower right. Pictured seated in the front row are Johnny Gotselig (Black Hawks), Art Chapman (N.Y. Americans), Frank Boucher (Rangers), Tiny Thompson (Bruins), Jack Adams (coach), Normie Smith (Red Wings), Mush March (Black Hawks), Cecil Dillon (Rangers) and Marty Barry (Red Wings). Standing in the all-Hall of Fame back row are Red Horner (Maple Leafs), Harvey “Busher” Jackson (Maple Leafs), Hap Day (N.Y. Americans), Charlie Conacher (Maple Leafs), Dit Clapper (Bruins), Sweeney Schriner (N.Y. Americans), Ebbie Goodfellow (Red Wings) and Eddie Shore (Bruins).
