Wayne Gretzky shattered Bobby Clarke’s league record for assists in a season by a center in his sophomore NHL season. Originally from the archives of the Edmonton Oilers, offered is the Great One’s 90th assist puck and plaque from his sensational 1980-81 season, when he set league records for assists (109) and points (164). Wayne surpassed Clarke’s record of 89 assists when he set up a goal by Jari Kurri for his first of five points in a 6-6 tie against Los Angeles at Northlands Coliseum on March 21, 1981. The record-breaking puck is displayed in a plastic puck case mounted at the top of a 7” x 9” wood plaque with details of Wayne’s feat on a metal plaque at the bottom.
Gretzky set up Jari Kurri’s power-play goal at 6:54 of the first to break the record, and finished the game with a goal and four assists.
Clarke set the previous record with 89 assists in 1974-75, a total he matched again in 1975-76.
Parts of the screened Oilers logo are worn off the face of this InGlasCo puck, which has three light slice marks to the edge and is appropriate to Edmonton’s NHL official game pucks of that era. Though there is a screw hole in the middle of the wood plaque, the record puck has no such hole. It is affixed to the back of the plastic display case by tape, and has lots of adhesive residue to the reverse with the screened NHL shield.
“Wayne Gretzky, 90th assist of the season, Assisting on a goal by Jari Kurri, breaking Bobby Clarke’s record of most assists (89) set by a centre in a single season in 1974-75 and 1975-76. TEAMS: Oilers vs. Los Angeles Kings” reads the gold-colored plaque at the bottom which measures 5 3/4" x 3 1/4" and has a small Oilers raised logo affixed to the bottom left corner.
Alberta Trophy & Gift Shop Ltd. sticker remains affixed to the back of the wood plaque.
