Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
In the summer of 2002, newspapers across North America were awash with rumors of a comeback for the Great One, Wayne Gretzky. Wayne had started the buzz by showing up to the Phoenix Coyotes prospects camp and taking part in the drills and training. Jeremy Roenick added to the fray by claiming Wayne was making a return but soon after Gretzky would set everyone straight by denying he had plans to play again. This black practice-style uniform was worn by Wayne during the period and has the old Coyotes logo (2000-03) on the chest with number "99" across the back. Made by Jofa in size 56, with the flag tag in the collar, the jersey shows very light use. Obtained in a bulk buy from the team by Arizona collector Walter Berry who recalls seeing Gretzky wearing black and red jerseys throughout the camp. Comes with a copy of Berry's letter of authenticity detailing his purchase from the Coyotes and stating this was the only black jersey made for Wayne during the period.
