Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
Known for their lavishly illustrated children’s books, this attractive and desirable baseball game was manufactured by the preeminent 19th century New York board game producer McLoughlin Bros. Featuring imagery used by McLoughlin on a number of different versions of this game throughout the 1890’s, a period batter and catcher are pictured in beautiful vivid colour on the lid with the directions printed on the underside, while the interior contains the game board. All game pieces are present and accounted for, including a colourful 3 5/8” spinner fashioned from thick cardboard stock, along with 18 small wooden game pieces evenly divided into two colours. A contemporary inscription administered in pencil along the underside reads “Earle from Maude/A Merry Christmas/1897”.
Wear is present along the bottom outer edges of the game board, with the cover exhibiting a few scratches and abrasions along with a broken top left corner. Measuring 10 ½” x 19 ½” x 1”, the apron on the right hand side of the lid appears to have broken off at some point and been repaired, with glue residue visible along the inner edge. We should note that this repair was expertly done, displaying beautifully. The game board’s aprons are also damaged, splitting from the base in a number of sections.
McLoughlin Brothers operated for almost a century beginning in 1828, and they were noteworthy for the colour printing techniques they developed for use in their children's books. Other items produced by the publishing firm included chapbooks, picture books, games, puzzles and paper dolls and soldiers. The firm was eventually purchased by competing board game manufacturer Milton Bradley in 1920.
