Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
Extremely significant and painstakingly rare, we have a 1907 postcard of the Stanley Cup Champion Montreal Wanderers pictured in Winnipeg during the ’07 Cup matches, and it’s been signed by early star and Hall of Famer Hod Stuart. This would be Stuart’s only championship as he would perish 2 months later at the young age of 28. Postmarked from Winnipeg on March 25th, the complete text from Stuart is as follows, “Having fun time in Winnipeg. Getting colder for tonight's game/How is the international/Hod”. The original recipient has been erased, with just the designation of Sault Ste Marie remaining. The signature and script has been administered in fountain pen, with next to no fading. The postcard itself remains in pleasing condition, with a few tiny surface creases and light corner wear. Toning is also present along both the front and the reverse. A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany.
Hod was one of the original 9 inductees in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945, and he passed away while diving into the Bay of Quinte on June 23rd 1907. Additional Hall of Famers pictured on the postcard include Lester Patrick, Moose Johnson, Riley Hern and Ernie Russell. As a point of reference, we sold an unsigned example of this postcard along with a second contemporary Wanderers postcard in 2009 for $587.00.
