Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016

Recognized in the hobby due to his exceedingly rare short-printed William Paterson card, Bert Corbeau should also be remembered for his important stature in the early days of the NHL. Not only did he play in the league’s inaugural season, he was one of the original Toronto Maple Leafs as well as a member of the Montreal Canadiens first Stanley Cup Championship team in 1916. This glossy sepia-toned 8” x 10” photo pictures the star in his Toronto St Pats sweater, with a period fountain pen inscription in the left hand section that reads “Bert Corbeau / St. Pats / 1918-1923”. While we believe this could very well be Corbeau’s signature as this photo was previously sold at auction as a signed example, due to the lack of confirmed exemplars, we are offering it as simply a vintage Corbeau photo with inscription.
The photo divulges its age with a number of minor flaws including creases and toning, with three ripped/clipped corners. There is also some slight warping along the bottom border. The reverse features an “International Newsreel” stamp with their New York address, along with “Bert Corbeau – Defence” handwritten in pencil in a different script than the inscription on front. There are also two spots of tape residue on the reverse to note.
