Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
An extreme rarity, serving as one of the most desirable of the small supply of pins issued for prominent hockey clubs at the turn of the 20th century, the Montreal Shamrocks were defending Stanley Cup champions at the outset of the 1899-1900 season, having been awarded Lord Stanley's hardware as champions of the Canadian Amateur Hockey League the previous season. The fabled club would successfully defended the Cup in challenge matches against the Victoria Hockey Team of Winnipeg and Queen's University in 1899, and would again win the league title in 1900 and defeat both Winnipeg and Halifax in Stanley Cup challenges. 1 ¼” in diameter and produced by noted maker Whitehead & Hoag of Newark, NJ, the pin features a clean white surface with minor scratches, with a gold-coloured reverse with the company’s logo and 1896 patent date.
