Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020

This fantastic old wool conjures up images of superstar Jean Beliveau in his Quebec Aces uniform, one he wore for a pair of seasons after his two years with the junior Citadels. Matching the style worn by Le Gros Bill during his Quebec City tenure, a 1950-51 Aces team photo shows the club wearing a style with three stripes over the sleeves and waist, identical to the offered Aces alternate captain’s wool sweater, with a second team photo from March of 1952, also showing the three stripes over the sleeves and waist. The man himself is also seen wearing this style of Aces’ jersey in both a picture and photo that are attributed to the 1951-52 season. With no labeling remaining and measuring-out to roughly a size 42, a gorgeous thick chenille team crest has been utilized, with “5” over the verso in red-over-white layered felt. The sweater also feature’s a tie-neck collar with six-eyelet configuration, with the alternate’s “A” placed over the left breast in white felt. An LOA will accompany this wonderfully historic Quebec garment.
We should note the provenance of this vintage wool sweater, with the accompanying LOA from goaltender Gilles Benoit stating that he served as the Aces’ back-up for home games during the 1958-59 season, and before leaving the club, obtained the offered sweater from the locker room to keep as a souvenir. Showing considerable wear from game use, there are numerous holes over the front and reverse, with large areas darned over each elbow section. There is also some wear to the team crest, with the reverse number torn from the white felt base over a small section on the right side, with numerous team repairs also visible, with 16 examples over the front and 10 on the reverse, with additional examples over each upper sleeve.
