Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2016

The 1991 and 1992 Stanley Cup victories for the Pittsburgh Penguins were a showcase for Mario Lemieux, where the Hall of Fame legend exhibited sheer dominance over the competition. Coming off these amazing Cup wins, Lemieux wore these very skates circa 1993-94, and they will be supported by a Classic Auctions LOA. Bauer 1000 models, these skates have been completely customized, with added felt section to the tongue of each skate, along with added cloth piece to the back ankle section of the left boot. There is also an additional mounted piece to the back bottom of the left skate. Each has “66” handwritten in marker on the underside, and both skates show nice wear, with abrasions along the bottom of the boots as well as marks/cuts over the toe sections.
We should also note that the added piece on the back of the left skate is visible on Getty images #73427213 and #73427261, but not high resolution enough to call a definitive photo-match. Highly desirable, it should be said that equipment from one of the game’s greatest player’s game-used during their pinnacle years doesn’t make itself available very often.
