The 1998 season saw the Williams F1 Team go in a new direction when they switched from the Renault engine to the newly formed Mecachrome V-10 engine. Jacques’ finished the season with two podium finishes and finished 5th in the Drivers' Championship.
This helmet a Bell Dominator, marked 98-1, was the first helmet of the season painted for Jacques to use in the 1998 season, it has been matched to a testing session on January 14, 1998 in Imola, Italy. This helmet has a “Williams” logo in white in the pink paint on the forehead. This is the only helmet used that season in this configuration. The helmet was then used at the team’s formal media presentation of the Williams FW20 on January 28 at Silverstone raceway in England, where it is photo-matched to the “Williams” logo on the forehead as well as a few chip marks in the paint.
The helmet is then used during the season as a promotional piece on display in the team hospitality areas and for a number of different media purposes including a 1998 French Playboy photo shoot. Some of the logos have been changed to suit the needs of whatever race the helmet was displayed at. Its current configuration has it in being used at a non-tobacco event.
The helmet still has its radio and show wear consistent with being used as a test helmet and includes the original Bell carrying bag with “J.V. 98-1” handwritten annotations.
The helmet is from Jacques Villeneuve’s personal collection and will come with his signed LOA.
