Two of the most cherished trophies in hockey, the Lady Byng and Lester B. Pearson (now the Ted Lindsay trophy) awards are given annually, with the Byng awarded to the "player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability”, while the Pearson trophy is awarded to the NHL’s outstanding performer as voted by the league’s players. This lot contains original letters written by both trophy namesakes. The Lady Byng letter has been scripted onto a 4” x 6” “Thorpe Hall” letter head, it’s in fountain pen and in beautiful condition. Dated “5-17-1921.”, it’s been signed “Byng of Vimy”. The Pearson letter is 8” x 9 ½” on official government letterhead with embossed coat of arms on the upper left and “Office of The Secretary of State for External Affairs Canada” on the right. Typed and dated “May 1, 1949” and with fold lines present, the content consists of Mr. Pearson responding to an autograph request. Signed in fountain pen, the signature is beautiful and flowing with no issues.
The only Canadian to ever win the Nobel Peace Prize (1957), Lester B. Pearson was leader of Canada from 1963 to 1968 and a passionate hockey fan. He had previously played for the Oxford Canadians while in London and coached the University of Toronto varsity team. The NHL Players Association introduced the Lester B. Pearson Award in 1971. Marie Evelyn Moreton, Lady Byng of Vimy, she presented the Lady Byng Trophy to the National Hockey League in 1925 when her husband was the Governor General of Canada. The first winner of the Byng was Frank Nighbor.
Accompanying these two signed letters are a pair of cards that feature the trophy donators from the 2008-09 Upper Deck Hockey Masterpieces series.
