The efforts of a savvy collector years ago produced this terrific opportunity, with 13 complete sets exhibiting very little handling or wear. It almost appears as though sets collated at the time of their release were purchased and then placed in nine-pocket pages for safe-keeping. There are exceptions along the way, but for the most part, the new owner will be receiving ensembles featuring NM, NM+, NM-MT and MINT cards, not to mention every important rookie card of the 1980s. The absence of a 1976-77 set interrupts the run, with an off-centered Wayne Gretzky RC including a small crease and in the VG-VG+ range, with however an additional similar Gretz rookie a swell bonus. Checklists and team checklists are all unmarked, with classic O-Pee-Chee not-always-perfect-centering intermittently spotted while perusing this intriguing, memory-provoking stash. The Boss, Super Mario, Saint Patrick, Stevie Y, the Golden Brett and more – their RCs are all here, with further details on our website.
A ’75-76 set gets things going with mostly sharp, crisp cards, similar to a ’77-78 set. The aforementioned exceptions would be the ’78-79 and ’80-81 assemblies, with a touch of corner wear noticed here and there. A small crease, light corner wear and an edge stain send the Mike Bossy rookie card to VG+. One Gretzky RC has a half-inch crease in the upper left corner region, while light creases in the other affect the lower left corner and bottom edge areas. The ’80-81 group includes a NM Mark Messier RC with good centering, while the Ray Bourque rookie has light corner wear and is EX+. Vast majority of the rest of the rookie cards are sharp, with the Patrick Roy RC at NM+. Slight diamond cuts in some of the ’85-86 cards is to note, with Mario Lemieux’s rookie and that of Al MacInnis slightly off-center and among them. Throughout the collection, centering is the flaw that affects sharp cards and not creases or corner wear. A fourteenth group of cards, a near complete set from ’82-83, is thrown onto the pile but does not look to have come from the same source, with corner wear and less-than-NM cards present. An instant and impressive OPC collection or interesting dealer inventory, this well-kept hoard offers much.
