Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2015

Incredible clarity on this amazing “Bandy” team photo that dates from the latter stages of the 19th century! Dated circa 1880-1890s, this magnificent image with incredibly fine details showing in the players’ faces and sweaters is the oldest photograph of a bandy team fully dressed with skates, sticks and jerseys that we have seen. Bandy was a precursor to hockey, a team game played with a round ball and curved one-piece wood sticks, as pictured here. The 9 1/4" x 7” dimensions of this original print are remarkable for its era, dating back some 125 years. An amazing and wonderfully preserved piece of winter sports history.
The reverse has some browning, particularly along the top portion, and lighter rectangles in each of the four corners, presumably where it had been taped in place on the back. There is a handwritten pencil notation that begins with “I” and an illegible word, with “1848” written further down and underlined on the otherwise blank reverse.
