Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2015

Scarce and fascinating find is this postcard from the outset of the 20th Century that features a terrific color shot of the Ottawa Silver Seven, which beautifully captures hockey's original Stanley Cup dynasty. Measuring approximately 3 ½” x 5 ½”, this old gem has a Smiths Falls postmark on the back dated March 7, 1906 with a cancelled one cent stamp. Addressed to “Miss Maggie McLean” of Inkerman, Ontario, the postcard has a handwritten note that reads, “I was in Ottawa and saw this bunch play with our lads”, on the front to the right team picture, with a postmark through it that is smudged and only March 7 can be made out. On the left side of the reverse the note continues, “Have you one of these cards, Will write tomorrow if I’m able. Very sick today.” The upper portion of the card’s reverse has “Souvenir Mailing Card” and “Printed and Published by Matthew Esdale, 201 Queen St., Ottawa” printed across the top. Tremendously rare offering here that is wonderfully preserved with only some wear on the edges to note.
