Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2015
We never tire of holding/beholding and describing cards from Topps’ inaugural hockey card set, given the pasteboards’ absolutely gorgeous/stunning vivid colors. The Red Wings were reigning Stanley Cup champs at the time and lead in terms of beauty and importance. The key Gordie Howe card, along with those of fellow legends Ted Lindsay and Alex Delvecchio are graded EX 5 by SGC, with Red Kelly higher at EX+ 5.5. The Rangers’ colors also look smashing, with Gump Worsley slabbed 5.5 and Allan Stanley at EX 5. Terry Sawchuk leads the “raw” contingent, with a small light corner crease dropping card #59 to VG+. Of the rest, we count three dozen which mirror the graded cards, while a rather light crease renders another dozen, (#1-Gamble, Bathgate, Pronovost and nine commons), VG or VG+. Two notched cards and 60-Schmidt are G. A prerequisite to an important vintage collection, this set will please its new owner.
