The Montreal Canadiens retired No. 3 to honor Hall of Fame defenseman Emile “Butch” Bouchard as part of the pregame festivities prior to their Centennial game on Dec. 4, 2009. To some observers it was an honor that was long overdue because the number had remained in circulation with the Habs long after Butch retired after winning the Stanley Cup for the fourth and final time in 1955-56. Defenseman Brad Brown’s 1998-99 Canadiens game-worn jersey is among the Montreal No. 3 jerseys that saw NHL duty before the number was fittingly retired for Bouchard. Brown played 13 games for the Canadiens in parts of two seasons after he was selected by Montreal with the 18th pick of the first round in the 1994 NHL Draft, including five games in 1998-99 before he was traded to Chicago on Nov. 16, 1998. Brown’s game-worn jersey has Starter tagging in the collar and a size 56-R tag is sewn inside the left rear hem.
Game wear includes board burns on both sleeves, an unrepaired burn hole on the right elbow with blue fabric burned onto the exposed the white elbow gusset lining, and black marks on the right sleeve, including just above the No. 3. Starter and NHL shield logos are embroidered on the right rear hem and there is evidence of a former longer nameplate. Defensemen Davild Wilkie and Zarley Zalapski wore No. 3 for the Canadiens the previous season. Comes with a Canadiens LOA signed by Rejean Houle.
