Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
A charter member of the International Professional Hockey League in 1904 - the first professional league formed – the Portage Lake Hockey Team of Houghton began life in 1899 and would boast a number of early iconic stars within their line-up by 1905-06, including HOFers Cyclone Taylor, Joe Hall and netminder Riley Hern. We have an antique postcard depicting the famous early club from 1902-03, a season that witnessed the Lakers crowned as United States Champions. Featuring a formal studio setting, the full team is pictured, with “Portage Lake Hockey Team, United States Champions – 1902-3” along the top border. With an intact stamp, the postcard has a 1908 postmark, with handwritten text over both the front and reverse.
Along with the aforementioned handwriting, there is some creasing along the left hand side, with a few small edge stains and a tiny amount of paper loss beneath “1902-3”, along with moderate corner wear.
