Always intriguing are big league documents from behind the scenes and we’ve got 6 here we think you’ll get a charge out of, all in beautiful condition. Minnesota North Stars Defenceman Tom Reid’s 1972 Standard Player’s Contract (2 years - $43,000 and $49,000) has been signed by not only league president and HOFer Clarence Campbell (ind. 1966, dec. 1984) but also by HOFer Walter Bush (ind. 2000), Wren Blair, who has signed twice (Blair added to his fame by helping discover a young Bobby Orr at a tournament in Gananoque, Ont), and of course Reid. All signatures are in clear blue ballpoint pen. An accompanying document regarding Reid’s bonus for the ’72-73 season has also been signed in blue pen by both Blair and Reid, and another is included as well – a 4” x 5 ½” notepad paper from the office of Wren Blair, written and signed in green ink by Blair, regarding Reid contacting the GM in the summer about deferment of some of Reid’s contract money. Reid has signed as well. Next is Dennis O’Brien’s 1972-73 North Stars Standard Player’s Contract, also signed in blue by Campbell, Bush, O’Brien, and twice by Blair. And the third contact belonged to goaltender Ed Johnston, who joined the Toronto Maple Leafs after some fine years in Boston (and who also was a member of the 1972 Team Canada Summit Series squad), and is the lone signer on his Leafs 4-year contract ($82,500, $87.5, $87.5, and $92.5) that spanned 1973-74 through to 1976-77. Next are 2 letters from prez Clarence Campbell at NHL headquarters in Montreal to North Stars GM Jack Gordon, informing Gordon that Tom Reid must have $100 deducted from his salary for leaving the bench, and Dennis O’Brien must pay $200 for receiving a match penalty. And finally, a 4-page 1960 Memorandum of Agreement between the NHL and referee Vern Buffey, outlining Buffey’s job to work pre-season, regular season, and playoff games for the total sum of $5000. On page 3 a paragraph has been crossed out in blue ink, and below, $50 has been replaced by $60 for each AHL game Buffey might work. Great content, signed on the final page in blue ink by Mr. Campbell and a witness.
