Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2015

Great old early-1960s goaltender’s mask protected the face of MJHL Winnipeg Braves backup goaltender Kim Sorensen, who started wearing it in practices after taking a puck in the face. This vintage mask, with complete strapping, has had the eye holes enlarged and shows a crack in the nose area, but otherwise remains in great shape and would make a very cool display piece for your collection. Also included is Sorensen’s youth sweater from his minor hockey team in Winnipeg, with the wool garment having a felt number 9 on the back and showing several repairs and a series of holes.
Sorensen manned the pipes for the Braves when regular goalie (and future NHLer) Wayne Stephenson had the night off, and he feels it was during the 1963-64 season when he and the Braves, while practicing with the Canadian National Team, had a shot hit his face and trainer Bill Addison Jr. gave him this mask to use in practice from then on. He mentions that the crack by the nose occurred from a shot taken later on in commercial hockey. His minor hockey wool sweater, measuring 19 ½” from front collar to hem and 18 ½” across the underarms, is from Winnipeg’s Bronx Park and is in the style of the Boston Bruins, although, as mentioned, no crest is on the front.
