Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2015

Presented to the Los Angeles Kings’ first owner, the business-savvy, multi-layered and often controversial Jack Kent Cooke, is this somewhat tarnished silver-plated serving tray/award with the inscription in the middle reading simply as “Jack Kent Cooke, L.A. Kings 1969”. Measuring 4” high and 14” from handle to handle, we’re unable to ascertain what the award was for, but it remains a splendid gem anyway from the man who bid on and was successful in bringing NHL hockey to Southern California when the league opened its doors to 6-team expansion in 1967. The Kings, now with 2 Stanley Cups under their belt (2011-12 and 2013-14) no longer draw sparse crowds like they did after Mr. Cooke took the gamble to bring big league hockey to the area, and this award serves as a poignant reminder of the struggling early years before the club turned a major corner and are now an elite powerhouse.
