Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/25/2014
Offered is a multi-signed Dryden Sher-Wood game-issued stick that dates from the mid-1970s. There are a dozen autographs, including Tony and Phil Esposito and fellow HOFer Rod Gilbert, who were teammates of Dryden's on Team Canada 1972. The stick is also signed by longtime Maple Leafs and Team Canada 1972 trainer Joe Sgro, and NHL stars Dan Bouchard, Simon Nolet, Danny Grant, Butch Goring, Tom Lysiak and Ron Schock, among others along the front of the shaft, which was sanded down for the signatures to be applied. "Dryden 29" is stamped on the shaft which has a small portion cut off the top end as the stick is shorter than other Dryden sticks from that era that we have encountered. The stick's vintage tape job was removed from the blade, which displays adhesive remnants. Game-issued stick displays some marks, including red paint transfer on the paddle. Ken Dryden burst onto the NHL scene with a Conn Smythe performance in the 1971 Stanley Cup playoffs. After winning his first six regular season starts, Dryden led the Montreal Canadiens to a stunning first-round upset of Bobby Orr’s Big Bad Bruins to send the Habs on their way to a semi-final win over Minnesota and a seven-game win over Bobby Hull’s Chicago Black Hawks in the final. Dryden followed up that debut with a Calder Trophy win the following season and he won a total of six Stanley Cups in a HOF career that lasted eight seasons.
