This 1987-88 Pittsburgh Penguins gamer was recycled for top draft pick Darrin Shannon for the 1988-89 training camp. Chosen fourth overall by Pittsburgh in the first round of the 1988 draft, Shannon was in camp that fall but never played a regular season game for the Penguins. There is evidence of a former nameplate on this recycled Pens gamer. Craig Simpson wore #18 for 21 games in 1987-88 and Jimmy Mann wore the same number for nine games. Game wear shows in black marks on the sleeves and front tail. Maska flag tag sits in the back of the neck. White and black CCM logo is embroidered on the right rear tail and the fight strap remains in place. Shannon suffered a hip pointer early in the Penguins’ training camp and was sent back to his junior team on September 21, 1988. Pittsburgh began its pre-season schedule four days earlier against the New York Rangers in Denver and we have no evidence that Shannon wore this road jersey in the 1988-89 pre-season. Shannon was dealt to Buffalo with Doug Bodger in the November 12, 1988 trade that brought All-Star goalie Tom Barrasso to Pittsburgh.
