What a cool story for Sidney Crosby's unique and distinctive photo-matched 2012-13 Pittsburgh Penguins game-worn jersey. This white Pens #87 beauty was Sid's backup road gamer and it saw duty in one game early in the lockout-shortened season, when the Kid took a puck in the face in Pittsburgh's game against the New York Islanders on February 5. Crosby switched out of his blood-soaked primary jersey into this gamer, which Sid bled all over as well. That blood has all been washed out, except for a bit of discoloration on the top edge of the Penguins crest on the front, but it shows in photos of Crosby wearing this jersey during the game, a 4-2 win for Pittsburgh. Sid assisted on James Neal's power-play goal in the first before leaving the game briefly after he was bloodied on his first shift of the second. He returned wearing this jersey and played 13 shifts the rest of the way, including for Pascal Dupuis' empty-netter with 39 seconds left in the third. Photos from the game offer solid matches to the unrepaired hole on the right elbow and the positioning of the captain's C on the left breast as well as the distinctive angle of the bottom portion of the C, along with its loose black thread. Size 56 flag tag sits in the back of the neck and "Backup 2013" is written in black marker on the fight strap. "Penguins 2013 Game Jersey Set 1" team patch is sewn inside the rear tail with a registry number that appears on the Penguins COA that accompanies this gamer along with a JerseyTRAK letter. Certificate of Authenticity on Penguins letterhead dated June 13, 2013 is signed by Penguins VP of Marketing James Santilli and equipment manager Dana Heinze.
JerseyTRAK letter states that Crosby’s white Penguins backup jersey “was entered into active status following a puck to the nose that resulted in blood staining on the primary jersey. This was the only time that the backup jersey was used during the 2012-2013 NHL Regular Season.”
