Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014

A fine night indeed in midtown Manhattan as the brand new Madison Square Garden opened its doors, folks walked through the turnstiles, and took in the sights and sounds of the visiting Montreal Canadiens playing the the new franchise that had morphed from the defunct Hamilton Tigers – the New York Americans. We have a rare vintage press photo from that inaugural game night at MSG, showing both teams and Canadian and American bands gathered on the ice after the game, which had ended with a 3-1 victory for the visitors. On the back are found the wire stamps and typed description of the event. What a find. What a photo. The attached caption on the back, handwritten as December 15, 1925, with the typed description mentioning the formal inauguration of the new Madison Square Garden, played under the auspices of the Neuological Society, and with the Foot Guard Band of Governor General Byng of Canada and the West Point Military Academy Band taking part. Truly an outstanding photo, in wonderful condition, with Morenz and Joliat and the gang taking in the festivities.
