Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013

A unique and extremely scarce issue put out by O’Keefe’s Beverages to pay tribute to the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 1931-32 Stanley Cup championship was a set of 20 coasters, or “blotters” as they were referred to in an original ad, measuring 6” by 6” from their furthest points and difficult to locate in any condition. PSA Population Report figures confirm their scarcity, with just 28 total coasters sent to PSA over the years, with our consignor’s fascinating ensemble featuring 13 “highest-graded-at-PSA” examples. The coasters feature the artwork of prominent Canadian cartoon artist Lou Skuce, with their numbers matching the players’ uniform numbers. ......Eight regular season games and seven in the playoffs got defenceman Fred Robertson’s name on the Stanley Cup and his image onto an O’Keefe’s coaster. Born in England but raised mostly in Canada, Fred only played another 26 NHL games but performed many years in the AHL, notably a decade for the Cleveland Barons. One of just two such Robertson coasters ever submitted to PSA for inspection, this FR 1.5 example edges a PR 1 to take highest-ever-graded-at-PSA honors.
