Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2013
Fascinating assortment of 19th century literature featuring hockey-related topics, including a wonderful January 12, 1895 Harper's Weekly with a feature titled "Hockey in Canada" and detailing the rules of the game. Terrific illustrations of players, with six art images picturing members of the top hockey teams of the day, including the Montreal AAA, Victorias, Wanderers and the Ottawa Hockey Club, and a referee holding a bell are spread nicely on the page. Another Harper's Weekly dated September 8, 1883 shows a full cover illustration of players on roller skates, with sticks and a ball and fans cheering on, titled "Polo On Roller Skates At Newport". Also included in this vintage lot is a 7" by 11" drawing of men on skates with sticks in the heat of outdoor action from 1855, titled "The Thames Frozen Over At Richmond", along with a 7 3/4 x 11" illustration titled "Hockey On The Ice" from 1893 with players on outdoor ice with sticks clasped, chasing what seems to be a ball, plus an April 4, 1896 two-part illustration of athletes performing different sports, with below, men in hockey action titled "Hockey At Hengler's". Rounding it all out is a January 8, 1893 full-page drawing of approximately 15 men battling hard for the puck on an outdoor pond or river. All of these wonderful illustrations and pages are in incredibly fine condition, with just hints of aging to note. Amazing hockey content from well over a century ago.
