Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2013
Cool vintage lot of World War II-era Toronto Maple Leafs memorabilia includes a 1939 Maple Leaf Gardens newsletter, a 1940-41 Maple Leafs calendar team picture montage, and a 1942 Maple Leaf Gardens playoff program. The playoff program is from the Saturday, March 28 game in the Leafs’ semi-final against the New York Rangers. Toronto’s 2-1 win gave them a 3-1 lead in the series which they would go on to win and advance to the final against Detroit. After dropping the first three games to the Red Wings, the Leafs came back with four straight wins to claim the Stanley Cup, becoming the first NHL team ever to overcome a 3-0 series deficit and win. Marvelous 72-page program from that memorable playoff year includes the lineup centerfold with the rosters of both the Rangers and Maple Leafs. It is in clean, crease-free condition with handling on the spine. The Maple Leafs braintrust of Conn Smythe, Happy Day and Frank Selke are featured on the top row of the calendar page with individual headshots of members of the 1940-41 Leafs, including HOFers Apps, Broda, Drillon and Schriner. A rendering of the outer façade of Maple Leaf Gardens runs along the top with caricatures on either end of the 13 1/2" x 17 3/4" paper page with vertical and horizontal fold creases into quarters. More great historical hockey reading in the 1939 Maple Leaf Gardens Midsummer Hockey News four-page newsletter featuring missives from Smythe and Selke. Nice and clean, it measures 8 1/2" x 11” with two horizontal fold creases with “1939” handwritten in pencil on the back page.
